Technology Report "Developing a Speech-Enabled Web Application with Microsoft .NET Speech SDK"

This document presents practical experience I had in developing a simple speech-enabled web application using Microsoft .NET Speech SDK V1.0 Beta 2 and Visual Studio .NET. I used C++ with Managed Extensions as language for the necessary server-side code. The application enables the user to conveniently choose an address in Vienna using a multimodal interface that accepts both conventional input via dropdown lists, buttons etc. and spoken input. This report outlines some basic principles of programming ASP.NET Web Forms applications and provides fundamental information on the .NET Speech SDK, points out differences between development in C#, Visual Basic and C++ and provides the source code of a sample application that could serve as a starting point for the reader's own development. In the final sections I describe my process of development, give details about the application's user interface and point out the advantages and disadvantages of the environment I used for creating the application.
